Wahoo! It’s off to see the Wizard

And what to my wondrous joy, a letter of acceptance to the University of Utah, College of Architecture and Planning, starting fall 2012.  “Congratulations . . . We have a very competitive applicant pool so you should feel fortunate to be joining a very talented class”.  We hear they receive approximately 100-200 applications from which they admit only 45 students.

I would like to thank the University of Utah College of Architecture and Planning for the opportunity to pursue this new adventure.  I am grateful to accept this invitation and I am very excited to help advance the work and enjoyment of architecture, particularly in the area of net zero energy and sustainability.

Also, I would like to thank all my professors and the staff at Salt Lake Community College for a great education during the last two years and the chance to earn an Associate of Science degree in Architecture, with honors.  Thanks to Katrina Green academic advisor for science and engineering.  Thanks to my fantastic professors: Craig Osborne, Penny Allison, Cesar Melo, Brian Jacobson, Jane Drexler environmental ethics, Mary Jane Keleher conservation biology, Brandon Kowallis digital media, Skyler Hellstrom, Lew Jeppson economics, Patricia Stranquist yoga, Charles Cummins calculus, Lynnette Yerbury cycling, John Edwards and David Schaffer physics, Marlin Clark intercultural communications, James Lund art, Jeff Plant architecture; with special thanks to Charlotte Howe, Norman Clark, and Kevin King.

Thanks to Paul Russell for his friendship, instruction, and letting me use his wood turning lathe.  Thanks to Ryan Poduska for his excellent design collaboration and working all night with me to finish my architecture portfolio application (to be posted later).  Most importantly I would like to thank my relatives for their support, my children, and especially my dear wife Janet, who in addition to being my very best friend was my mathematics and physics tutor.  ;-)

Thank you,

Architecture, Industrial Design, and Economics

Welcome!  My name is Michael Rybin.  This college e-Portfolio includes highlights of my current course work and experience at University of Utah.

Any bona fide grants or scholarships are welcome.

Summer 2012 semester, while waiting for a response to my application to the College of Architecture and Planning (plan A), or perhaps another architecture college; I am a full-time student at the University of Utah pursuing a BS in Economics with a minor in Design (plan B).

May 3, 2012, I graduated from SLCC with Institutional Honors with an Associate of Science in Architecture including a 3.74 GPA and membership in the SLCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  You can see highlights from my past college course work at Net Zero Energy Architecture WordPress.

Furthermore, I have been requesting estimates from architects and builders to renovate my home with the goal to achieve net zero energy or passive solar.  It feels great, and is an interesting experience to put into practice what we learn and feel passionate about.  I’ll keep you posted as events unfold.

As you can see, I love architecture, net-zero energy, Passive House design, and sustainability.  It makes sense intellectually and financially.

Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

Thank you,
Michael Rybin~۩~
